Playa Viva , the regeneration-driven Mexican beach hotel offering guests the luxury of immersing themselves in nature, is proud to announce that it has achieved B-Corp Certification with a score of 110. The highest score of any hotel certified by B-Corp to date. Certified B -Corps are for-profit brands that use the power of business to build a more inclusive, equitable and regenerative economic system for people and the planet. Brands must score above 80 to achieve B-Corp Certification; On average, B-Corp certified hotel scores range between 80 and 88. Operating within an industry that has a significant global environmental footprint, Playa Viva's mission is to transform the experience of what a Middle East Mobile Number List hotel can be, both in terms of the hotel's community and environmental impact and the guest journey. As the founding hotel launching the Regenerative Travel Member Hotels collection , Playa Viva's ethos is driven by its core values of using cleaner, more abundant and transparent energy, water and waste streams; promote and create biodiversity; create transformative experiences; promote a meaningful community and create a living legacy.
Since opening in 2008, Playa Viva has been an immersive celebration of what is authentic and unique to its location within 200 acres of nature reserve on the Pacific coast of Mexico. As a brand built on the highest standards of environmental and social impact, below are just some of the commitments that secured the hotel's B-Corp certification:
Spearheading and funding the non-profit organization ReSiMar , a community-driven watershed regeneration project (working across five nodes: education, sustainable fishing, water, conservation and permaculture) and the on-site sea turtle sanctuary, The Living Turtle , which protects endangered turtles. Playa Viva commits to donating at least 10% of company profits (or 2% of sales) each year, regardless of the company's annual financial performance, to support these projects.
The property seeks to source everything from organic bedding to sustainably harvested building materials locally. In 2022, a collaboration with award-winning architecture firm Nomadic Resorts fused traditional local craftsmanship with cutting-edge regenerative construction methods to create six new innovative bamboo treehouse-shaped rooms handcrafted from locally grown materials. The treehouses were recently awarded in the AHEAD 2022 awards – Lodges, Cabins and Tented Camps Global Category.
The extensive on-site permaculture farm provides approximately 10% of the hotel's food supply with the surplus supplied to local restaurants and the village, while a further 20% comes from small farmers, ranchers and fishermen in the catchment and the local ecosystem.
The property is powered by 100% off-grid solar energy, solar thermal hot water, and on-site gray and black water processing.
Located on 200 acres with a full mile of pristine beach, the Playa Viva team is dedicated to reforesting the landscape, including the coastal forest, and promoting global restoration of the endangered lagoon mangrove and long-term regeneration of the ecosystem and its biodiversity.
Commenting on the B-Corp certification announcement, Playa Viva co-founder and owner and Regenerative Travel co-founder David Leventhal said “ We started Playa Viva in 2008 as a regenerative effort and our certification is a testament to us staying true to our values.” core values, we walk the path and commit to creating the planet we want for future generations, taking advantage of travel to achieve that positive change. Currently, this is the ONLY certification that we felt was worth applying for, and we are very proud of the score that resulted from our 14 years of operating a hotel and that it met our values for creating meaningful community and transformative experiences .
« Our goal is constant improvement, and we will use B-Corp's detailed analysis data to guide us. We invite other B-Corps and other social and environmental impact efforts to join forces to leverage the proven and measured success of Playa Viva to achieve even more impact and serve as a model for hotels, guests and investors that hospitality can be a model successful in creating change .”
In an era where consumers are increasingly voting with their purchasing and investment decisions, staying at Playa Viva is a vote for holistic, community-driven regenerative change for human health, biodiversity restoration, regeneration of natural resources and the construction of a more resilient culture and local economies. Playa Viva's experience indicates that care, determination, strategy and patience can generate a notable impact. Especially in an area like the rural town of Juluchuca and the local watershed that have been ignored by governments, NGOs and other groups, Playa Viva's B-Corp Certification further proves that these places are actually exactly the places with abundant resources that must be harnessed to meet ambitious international climate goals.
